A pregnancy is a joyous event, but the new corona virus can also cause you to deal with some worries and uncertainty. It is a strange time and it is important to know what measures to take against COVID-19 during your pregnancy. It is completely understandable that as a pregnant woman you worry about what COVID-19 will mean for you in pregnancy.
Not to forget what to do when the baby arrives? For pregnant women it is an uncertain and fearful time. Nevertheless, there is no reason for pregnant women to worry about themselves.
Covid-19 and pregnancy: important to know

No increased risk of miscarriage or birth defects
The new coronavirus does not give pregnant women an increased risk of miscarriage or congenital anomalies. As far as is known, COVID-19 is no different in pregnancy than other viral infections that give you a fever. Nevertheless, it is important to keep an eye on the fever. Extremely high fever can cause you to have (premature) contractions. In this case, always contact your midwife or doctor.
Pregnant women do not get sicker from the new corona virus
In general, pregnant women do not have an increased risk of complications from the coronavirus. However, it is important to adhere to the measures at the end of pregnancy as strictly as possible. At the end of pregnancy, your airways will already have to endure a lot. The chance of respiratory infections therefore increases in the last trimester. This can cause additional problems in the event of contamination with covid-19.
What measures should you take as a pregnant woman?
The measures for COVID-19 and pregnancy are almost the same as for everyone. Only it is all the more important that you observe them correctly. After all, during your pregnancy, you just really don't want a corona infection and everything that comes with it. In short: Avoid crowds Keep five feet away Wash your hands regularly with soap and water Cough and sneeze inside your elbow Use paper tissues and throw them away after use
The babyshower
Unfortunately, it is currently not allowed to visit more than three people per day. So you can hold (or receive) a baby shower, but this will have to be done very intimately. Or organize an online baby shower. This also applies to other parties, such as a gender reveal or the maternity drink. It is best to cancel or postpone these types of meetings during your pregnancy until the risk of COVID-19 decreases.
Window visit
For several reasons, it is recommended to definitely postpone the window visit until at least seven days after the delivery. This is not only to limit the risk of infection for yourself and the baby, but also for the maternity nurse. Who one day comes into contact with several maternity wives and newborn. After this week, you may receive a maximum of three people per day for a maternity visit. However, it is important that the visitors do not have corona-like complaints, they wash their hands well, stay at a distance of one and a half meters and preferably wear a mouth mask to minimize the risk.
I think I have been infected with COVID-19
To date, there are no signs that the new coronavirus poses an increased risk for pregnant women. Until now, the majority of people, including women during their pregnancy, has been given COVID-19 in a mild form. Do you have complaints such as coughing, breathlessness, elevation (or fever) or a sudden loss of smell or taste without your nose being blocked? Then get yourself tested, stay home. Even if this means that you have to reschedule the appointment with the midwife. You can go outside again if you are free of complaints for 24 hours.
Do you feel very ill and do you have questions or doubts about COVID-19 and pregnancy? Then always contact your doctor.
