When do you know the gender of the baby

Published on 6 January 2020 at 16:12

If you are pregnant, the health of the child is of course number one.

Nevertheless, the curiosity about the gender remains very high!

While most don't, you may have a slight gender preference.

Curious when you know the gender of your baby? You can read it in this blog!

How is the sex of your baby determined?

The sex of the baby is determined during the fertilization of the egg with a sperm cell. The gender of the baby is determined by means of the sex chromosomes of the father and the mother. The maternal sex chromosome is "XX" and the father is "XY". The mother always passes on an X chromosome and the father an X or a Y chromosome. The sex of the baby depends on which chromosome the father passes on. If the father passes on an X chromosome, it becomes a girl (XX), but if the father passes on a Y chromosome, it becomes a boy (XY). This “passing on” of sex chromosomes already takes place during fertilization.

But when can you discover the gender yourself?

During the 20-week ultrasound, any physical abnormalities of the child are looked at, but the gender is also visible. During this ultrasound you can see whether it is a boy or a girl. Are you expecting twins? Then you may even be pregnant with both! If you do not want to know the gender at the time of the 20-week ultrasound, you can of course indicate this. By the way, prior to the ultrasound you will also be asked if you want to know the gender. Nowadays you can also choose to discover the gender earlier than the 20-week ultrasound. These are called fun ultrasounds. With this you can sometimes see the gender at 14/15 weeks! Do you want to make sure that you can see the sex of your baby during a fun ultrasound? Then you better have a little more patience and wait until week 16 of your pregnancy. Then the gender can almost always be seen.

Nub theory

Can't you really wait that long? Then you can even use the so-called nub theory in your 12th week of pregnancy. The nub is a kind of protrusion or bulge between the legs of the baby, which can give an indication of the gender. At week 11 of pregnancy, the nub develops into a boy's or girl's genitals. The nub theory looks at the position of the nub, which can be used to determine the sex of the child. However, it is not very reliable as the position of the nub can still change. For the most reliable result, it is therefore better to wait a few more weeks until the 20-week ultrasound.

Other theories about your baby's gender

There are also a lot of other theories that you can try to guess whether you have a boy or girl in your stomach. Below we mention two of these theories.

The Chinese gender calendar

For example, there is the Chinese gender calendar. This is a calendar that "predicts" whether you are more likely to have a boy or a girl. By entering your age and the month in which conception took place, you can see what the gender of your child will be.

Way you carry your belly

Another theory is about the way you carry your belly. If you wear your stomach low, it is predicted to be a boy. Is your stomach on the high side? Then according to this theory it is predicted that it is a girl.

Baby gender already known?

Throw a gender reveal party! So there are plenty of ways and moments to find out what the sex of your child is. And you can find out about this yourself quite early in the pregnancy. Is the gender already known? Then it is of course nice to announce this to your friends and family during a gender reveal party! But until then you have to be patient for a while ...
